M’Liss’s Garden by M’liss Rae Hawley (page 11): I used a favorite photo Michael took of a sunflower in our yard and transferred it onto fabric. The bag fabric is from my Jo-Ann line, M’Liss’s Garden. Notice the seed beads embellishing the flower centers. A bejeweled frog lies nearby. Assemble your treasured scraps of silk, velvet, and lace on a lightweight foundation to create fabric for your purse or tote.

The top layer is made from small motifs placed and embroidered randomly to add more texture, interest, and fun. Layer scraps and strips of fabric and snippets of thread with organza, netting, or even vinyl, and secure them with lots of free-motion stitchery. Felting Couching Along the Andes by M’Liss Rae Hawley (page 27): I couched sequin trim; silk, organza, and grosgrain ribbons; tiny tasseled trim; metallic thread; and other red “goodies”—all with red thread—to make a strong statement on my black-and-white saddle bag purse.

I always use the same method (see my Round Robin Renaissance book for those instructions, pages 72–74). Note: Cut strips in a width that is proportional to the size of the bag. Note that you will be folding the strip in half lengthwise and taking in ½˝ in seam allowances. If the edges of the bag are straight, cut the strips on the straight grain of the fabric. If the edges are curved, cut the strips on the bias of the fabric. Small Shoulder Purse with Flap by Carla Zimmermann (page 10): Carla found a gorgeous decorative bead for the closure on this beautiful purse.
